As the catchy, twee-folk theme tune from the critically acclaimed black comedy television series Weeds, "Little Boxes" perfectly encapsulates the absurdities and paradoxes of suburban American life. Repurposing a 1962 folk idyll from singer Malvina Reynolds—in which the artist lampooned the cookie-cutter conformity of 1960s suburban housing developments ("Little boxes on the hillside / Little boxes made of ticky-tacky / Little boxes on the hillside / Little boxes all the same"), "Little Boxes" was given a new lease of life decades later when it was featured in the opening credits for Weeds. "Little Boxes" was used to introduce the hit show for the first three seasons, with original songwriter Malvina Reynolds appearing in the first season before a number of other notable artists—from Elvis Costello and Death Cab for Cutie to Joan Baez and Donovan—took over to perform their own renditions in seasons two and three.
