"Lateralus" (2002) is a song from progressive metal band Tool's third studio album of the same name. Very much in line with the group's earlier work, the track extensively features odd-time signatures that change throughout the entirety of the song, as well as references to Native American oral stories (through the mention of the colors black, white, red, and yellow) and Hermeticism. Written by Maynard James Keenan, Adam Jones, Justin Chancellor, and Danny Carey, and produced by Dave Bottrill, "Lateralus" is known among Tool fans for its complex percussive rhythm and corresponding lyrical patterns, which are based on the Fibonacci sequence. Lyrically speaking, the song encourages listeners to stop overanalyzing and embrace the randomness of life. It was released as the album's third single on February 2002 and reached Number 14 on the US Mainstream Rock chart and Number 18 on the US Alternative Airplay chart.
