After forming Soundgarden with lead guitarist Kim Thayil in 1984 and releasing five mammoth albums with the grunge icons, Chris Cornell set off on his solo career in 1999. Euphoria Mourning arrived that year, with its Grammy-nominated opening track "Can't Change Me" and an introspective collection of songs that mixed acoustic reflections with hard rock and rootsy, blues-driven melodies. Making titular reference to the meteorological phenomenon of a sunshower – where rain occurs despite the sun shining – the song showcases Chris Cornell's poetic lyricism ("Dark as roses and fine as sand / Feel your healing and your sting again / I hear you laughing and my soul is saved / On forgotten graves you cry") and was featured on the soundtrack for 1998 romantic drama movie Great Expectations – which starred Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow – as well as turning up as a bonus track on some versions of Euphoria Mourning.
