Peter, Paul and Mary single-handedly helped to popularise folk music, taking Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie tunes like If I Had a Hammer," and This Land Is Your Land" to a new level while revitalising numbers like this one. Written, composed, and recorded by Canadian legend Gordon Lightfoot for his 1966 debut LP Lightfoot!, "Early Mornin' Rain" tells the tale of a lonely rolling stone 'with a dollar in his hand' and 'an aching in his heart' trying to make his way home. Peter, Paul and Mary remade the song in 1966 and transformed it into a Top 40 Canadian while also grazing the Billboard Hot 100 where they landed at number 91. The folk trio included the song on their fifth studio album See What Tomorrow Brings, which also featured covers of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," penned by Ewan MacColl, among other tracks. Bob Dylan later recorded a version of "Early Mornin' Rain" for his 1970 album Self Portrait.
