Co-written by Keith Sykes, “You Got Gold" served as the twelfth track on John Prine’s 10th album The Missing Years, which was released in 1991 and boasted appearances from pop and rock A-listers such as Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, and John Mellencamp. "You Got Gold" also featured backing vocals from Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers. The Missing Years picked up the 1991 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and was reissued by original label Oh Boy Records, whose deluxe vinyl came packaged with a bonus track titled "The Third of July," lifted from John Prine's appearance on the PBS concert series Sessions at West 54th in 2001. Following John Prine's death in 2020 from complications caused by COVID-19, an annual tribute concert titled "You Got Gold" has been staged in his honor.
