Ohio-born country star Bobby Bare launched himself on the scene with the 1958 talking blues single "The All American Boy" before drifting towards the world-famous Nashville sound where he found his voice. Released in 1963’s, Bobby Bare's countrypolitan 500 Miles Away From Home LP was the follow-up to his Grammy-winning country-pop single "Detroit City", and the countrypolitan title track turned him into a household name. The LP yielded some of his most enduring favourites, including this take on an old American folksong – first popularised by Billy Grammer whose rendition went to number five on the US country chart and number four on the pop chart in 1959. "Gotta Travel On" bridges rootsy folk with rambling country to paint a restless portrait of a rolling stone on the road ("I've laid around and played around this old town too long / And I feel like I've gotta travel on").
